Variant with white background disc, smaller central blue disc, wider white 
ring and no stars; the mirror-image of the whole device was sometimes used as 
well.

The device without the stars was also used without a background disc, as in 
the current roundel.

Clearly, not much care was taken to paint all the details of the roundel as 
long as the whole was recognizable enough, which explains why it was eventually 
simplified to the present design.
